Life in mainstreet U.S.A. - Sweet Apple, Ohio; gets turned topsy turvy with the arrival of Conrad Birdie.
Birdie, a rock & roll superstar of the 1960's is being drafted into the army.
Kim and Hugo are high school sweethearts, whose relationship gets tested and strained, when Kim is chosen to kiss Conrad Birdie goodbye on the Ed Sullivan show.
The subplot concerns Albert, a mama's boy; and also an aspiring song writer. Albert is responsible for Birdie's appearance on the Ed Sullivan show. He is also torn between his desire to marry his girlfriend Rosie, and his being intimidated by his mother.
